Airway-Focused Orthodontics on Maui
How a child's jaws develop and how well they breathe are connected, and orthodontics can play a supporting role in creating room for healthy breathing. At Maui Braces, Dr. Alex Verga takes an airway-aware approach, screening during evaluations and coordinating with medical providers when needed, at our Kahului, Makawao, and Lahaina offices. Call or text (808) 874-9229 for a free consultation.
What Is Airway-Focused Orthodontics?
Airway-focused orthodontics looks at the bigger picture of how the jaws and the airway grow together. Rather than only straightening teeth, it considers whether there is enough room in the upper jaw and arch to support healthy development. When appropriate, orthodontic tools like palatal expansion can help create that room as part of overall treatment.
Finding the Root Cause, Together With Your ENT
Breathing problems can come from several places, and pinning down the real cause takes a team. We work alongside your ENT to determine the source of an obstruction, which may be nasal, in the sinuses, enlarged adenoids or tonsils, or a lower-airway narrowing from a small jaw or soft tissue crowding the neck. A narrow or restricted airway is also part of the picture in sleep apnea, where breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep. We do not diagnose sleep disorders, that is a medical diagnosis, and your physician can order a sleep study when one is warranted. Once the cause is understood, orthodontics can play an integral role in treatment when the issue is structural, for example widening a narrow upper jaw to support the airway.
Signs Worth Having Evaluated
Parents sometimes notice things like habitual mouth breathing, restless or noisy sleep, or a narrow palate with crowded teeth. These are not a diagnosis, but they are worth having looked at. At an evaluation we can assess the orthodontic factors and, when a medical concern such as a sleep issue may be involved, point you toward the right medical provider, typically your ENT or a sleep physician, for proper diagnosis.
How We Help
Our role is the orthodontic part of the picture: screening early, using expansion such as a palatal expander or MARPE to widen a narrow upper jaw when indicated, and coordinating with your medical team. We do not diagnose or treat sleep disorders ourselves, but when the cause is structural, orthodontics can be an integral part of the solution, so you get the right help from the right provider.
Why Maui Braces
An airway-aware approach takes a specialist who knows where orthodontics helps and where to refer. Dr. Alex Verga is a board-certified orthodontist whose practice is limited to orthodontics, with a careful, honest approach and deep Maui community roots.
Airway Orthodontics: FAQs
What is airway orthodontics?
It is an approach that considers how the jaws and airway develop together, and uses orthodontic tools like expansion, when appropriate, to help create room for healthy development as part of treatment.
Can orthodontics help with breathing?
Healthy jaw development and a wider upper arch can support better breathing room. Orthodontics addresses the structural, orthodontic side. Any medical breathing concern should be diagnosed and managed by a medical provider, and we coordinate with them.
What can cause an airway obstruction?
It can come from several places: the nose or sinuses, enlarged adenoids or tonsils, or a lower-airway narrowing from a small jaw or soft tissue around the neck. Because the cause varies, we work alongside your ENT to identify it before deciding how orthodontics can help.
What signs should parents watch for?
Things like habitual mouth breathing, restless or noisy sleep, and a narrow palate with crowding are worth having evaluated. They are not a diagnosis, but they are a good reason to come in.
When should my child be evaluated?
An orthodontic evaluation around age 7 is a great time to assess jaw development. If anything suggests a medical concern, we will point you to the right provider.
Do you treat sleep apnea?
We do not diagnose sleep disorders, that is a medical diagnosis, and your physician can order a sleep study when one is warranted. We work alongside your ENT and physician to find the root cause, and when the issue is structural, such as a narrow upper jaw, orthodontics can play an integral role in treatment.
