Braces on Maui

Maui Braces provides braces for kids, teens, and adults at our Kahului, Makawao, and Lahaina offices, led by board-certified orthodontist Dr. Alex Verga. Braces use small brackets and a guiding wire to correct crowding, spacing, and bite issues, and they handle the widest range of cases, including complex ones clear aligners cannot. Many patients can even start the same day as their free consultation. Call or text (808) 874-9229 to book.

How Braces Work

Braces straighten teeth with brackets bonded to each tooth and a thin archwire that connects them. At each visit, the wire is adjusted so it gently guides your teeth into their ideal position. Because your orthodontist controls every movement, braces give precise, predictable results across a very wide range of cases, with low day-to-day effort on your part.

Metal Self-Ligating Braces

We use metal self-ligating braces. Instead of the elastic ties on older braces, self-ligating brackets use a small built-in door that holds the wire in place. That makes them lower in profile and sleeker, and it creates less friction, so your teeth move more freely and efficiently, often with more comfortable, less frequent adjustments. They are also easier to keep clean.

We do not offer clear or ceramic braces. Ceramic brackets are more brittle and break more easily, which interrupts treatment and can cause discomfort, and they create more friction against the wire, which moves teeth more slowly than metal. Metal self-ligating braces give you the strongest, lowest-friction, most efficient result.

Are Braces Right for You?

Braces are the most versatile choice in orthodontics. They are ideal for complex cases and bite corrections, they work for every age including young children, and they take low daily effort, since they are always on and always working. If you would rather not keep track of a removable appliance, or your case is more involved, braces are usually the most dependable path to a great result.

    Brackets and wire placed

Metal self-ligating brackets are bonded to each tooth and connected by a guiding archwire. Placement is comfortable and takes about an hour.

  4. 4

    Regular adjustments

About every 8 to 10 weeks, you come in for a quick visit to adjust the wire and keep your teeth moving on track.

  5. 5

    Your smile takes shape

Treatment typically runs 12 to 24 months, depending on your case. Dr. Alex gives you a personalized timeline at your consultation.

  6. 6

    Braces off, retainers on

When treatment is complete, your braces come off and you move into retainers. You wear them full-time for about 8 weeks, then just at night for life to hold your smile in place. Your treatment includes three sets, so you always have a backup if one is lost.

How Much Do Braces Cost on Maui?

Braces at Maui Braces range from $7,000 to $9,000, depending on the complexity of your case, and include three sets of retainers. Early (Phase I) treatment for younger children is a shorter, more limited course and runs $4,500 to $5,500. We offer 0% financing and work with your insurance benefits, and your exact cost is confirmed at your free consultation. Because braces and clear aligners cost the same here, you can choose the treatment that fits you best rather than the one that costs less.

Braces for Kids, Teens, and Adults

Kids. Braces can guide growing smiles, and for some children early Phase I treatment makes later treatment simpler. We recommend it only when it genuinely helps.

Teens. The classic age for braces. A durable, low-effort appliance and steady results make them a dependable choice for busy teen schedules.

Adults. It is never too late. Many adults choose braces to finally get the smile they have always wanted.

Patient Story: Early Treatment

A 7-year-old came to our Makawao office with a crossbite and not enough room for the adult teeth coming in. Dr. Verga used a short, focused course of early treatment to guide jaw growth and create space, which set up a simpler, more predictable phase later on. Early treatment is only recommended when it genuinely makes the bigger picture easier.

Patient Story: Comprehensive Treatment

A 13-year-old came to our Kahului office with significant crowding and a tooth that had not erupted into place. Because the case needed precise, complex movement, Dr. Verga recommended metal self-ligating braces. Treatment ran about 20 months, and because the braces were always working, the family did not have to manage any wear time. The teen finished with a straight, well-aligned bite and three sets of retainers to keep it that way.

Braces on Maui: FAQs

How long do braces take?

Most cases take about 12 to 24 months, depending on what needs to be corrected. Dr. Alex gives you a personalized estimate at your consultation.

What are self-ligating braces?

Instead of elastic ties, self-ligating braces use a small built-in door that holds the wire. They are lower-profile and lower-friction, so teeth move more freely and efficiently, often with more comfortable, less frequent adjustments, and they are easier to keep clean.

Do you offer clear or ceramic braces?

No. Ceramic brackets break more easily, which interrupts treatment and can cause discomfort, and they create more friction that moves teeth more slowly than metal. We use metal self-ligating braces for the strongest, most efficient result.

Do braces hurt?

You may feel some soreness for a day or two after your braces go on and after each adjustment. It is mild, temporary, and easily managed.

Can I really start braces the same day as my consultation?

Yes. If you are current on your dental cleanings and have no pending dental work, we can place your braces the same day as your free consultation, with no second visit.

How often are adjustments?

About every 8 to 10 weeks, with quick visits to keep your treatment on track.

Will I need rubber bands with my braces?

Possibly. When your bite needs correcting, small elastic rubber bands bring your upper and lower teeth into the right position. If yours need them, we show you exactly how and when to wear them, and consistent wear makes a real difference in both your result and your timeline.

Will insurance cover braces?

Many plans with an orthodontic benefit apply. We verify your benefits before you start so there are no surprises.

What foods should I avoid with braces?

Steer clear of hard, sticky, and chewy foods that can damage brackets and wires. We give you a full list, and most favorites are still on the table.

How many retainers do I get after braces?

Three sets, included in your cost. You wear retainers full-time for about 8 weeks, then nightly for life. The most common reason people need treatment again is that they lose a retainer and stop wearing it, so the three sets keep a backup ready.

Do braces work for adults?

Absolutely. Braces work at any age, and many of our patients are adults finally getting the smile they have always wanted.
