Crowded Teeth Treatment on Maui

Crowding happens when there is not enough room in the arch for all the teeth, so they compete for space and overlap. Part of the reason is modern life. Our jaws are built to grow through chewing, and softer modern diets mean less of the hard chewing that helps jaws develop their full width. Narrower jaws leave less room for the teeth.

Your teeth also sit at a balance point between two forces: the tongue pushing out from the inside, and the lips and cheeks pushing in from the outside. When that balance is off, for example when the tongue rests low instead of up against the roof of the mouth, teeth can drift out of line.

Crowding tends to increase over time, too. As the arch narrows and the front teeth tip inward toward the tongue, there is less length along the arch, so the teeth overlap more as the years go on.

For most cases, braces or clear aligners gently guide the teeth into alignment. When crowding comes from a narrow upper jaw, especially in growing children, a palatal expander can create room first so teeth have somewhere to go. For smaller space needs, we sometimes use light enamel smoothing (IPR) rather than removing teeth.
