Overbite Treatment on Maui
An overbite is one of the most common bite issues we treat. At Maui Braces, board-certified orthodontist Dr. Alex Verga corrects overbites with braces or clear aligners (Invisalign or Spark) at our Kahului, Makawao, and Lahaina offices. Call or text (808) 874-9229 for a free consultation.
What Is an Overbite?
Two related things often get grouped together here. An overbite is how much the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth vertically when you bite down, and a deep bite is a large overbite. An overjet is different: it is how far the upper front teeth stick out horizontally ahead of the lowers. Many people have some of both, and they are treated a little differently, so we look at each.
Why Treat an Overbite or Overjet?
A deep overbite slowly wears down the lower front teeth over the years, a process called attrition. That wear is a genuinely expensive problem to fix later, often requiring extensive dental work that costs more than braces would have. Correcting the bite now protects those teeth.
An overjet, where the upper teeth stick out, can come from the upper front teeth being flared forward (proclination) or from a smaller lower jaw. Beyond looking unsightly and not being functional, teeth that stick out are at real risk of trauma. They are far more likely to be chipped or knocked in a fall or while playing sports. Bringing them back protects them and improves the smile.
How We Treat Overbites on Maui
Braces are the workhorse for bite correction, often paired with small elastic rubber bands that bring the upper and lower teeth into the right relationship. In growing children, we can guide jaw development at the ideal time. Clear aligners can correct milder overbites. Dr. Alex recommends the most predictable path for your case.
Patient Story
A teen came to our Makawao office with a deep overbite and some crowding. Dr. Verga used braces with elastics over about 20 months to correct the bite and align the teeth, finishing with a comfortable, even bite and retainers.
Why Maui Braces

Overbite: FAQs
What is the difference between an overbite and an overjet?
An overbite is how much the upper front teeth vertically overlap the lowers. An overjet is how far the upper teeth stick out horizontally. Many people have a bit of both, and Dr. Alex addresses whichever applies.
Is an overbite bad for you?
A deep overbite can cause uneven wear, jaw strain, and gum irritation. Over the years it slowly wears down the lower front teeth (attrition), and repairing that later often costs more than treatment would now. A mild overbite may be fine. An exam tells you whether yours is worth treating.
Can Invisalign fix an overbite?
Clear aligners can correct milder overbites. Deeper or more complex bites are usually more predictable with braces and elastics.
Do kids need early treatment for an overbite?
Sometimes. Guiding jaw growth at the right age can make later treatment simpler. We only recommend early treatment when it genuinely helps.
Will I need rubber bands?
Possibly. Small elastic rubber bands are a common, effective way to correct a bite. If yours needs them, we show you exactly how to wear them.
