Gap Teeth Treatment on Maui

A gap between the teeth, often called a diastema, is one of the most satisfying things to fix with modern orthodontics. At Maui Braces, board-certified orthodontist Dr. Alex Verga closes gaps and spacing with clear aligners (Invisalign or Spark) or braces at our Kahului, Makawao, and Lahaina offices. Call or text (808) 874-9229 for a free consultation.

What Causes Gaps Between Teeth?

Gaps appear when there is extra space between teeth that do not meet. The most common is a space between the two front teeth. Causes include a tooth-size discrepancy (teeth that are small or narrow for the jaw), a missing tooth, the way the teeth erupted, certain habits, or a band of tissue called a frenum that sits low between the front teeth.

Sometimes the spacing is really a tooth-size issue. The upper lateral incisors, the teeth on either side of your two front teeth, are sometimes naturally small or narrow (often called “peg” laterals), so even with everything in the right position there is more space than the teeth can fill. In those cases the best result combines orthodontics to position the teeth, then small cosmetic build-ups or veneers by your dentist to complete the look. Dr. Alex will tell you if that applies to you.

The tongue can play a role too. Resting or pushing the tongue against the front teeth over time can open spaces.

Why Close a Gap?

Beyond appearance, gaps can let food pack in and can affect how your teeth meet. Many people simply want to close a gap for confidence, and doing so also helps protect the gums and even out the bite. The good news is that spacing is often one of the more straightforward things to correct.

How We Close Gaps on Maui

Clear aligners (Invisalign or Spark) are especially good at closing spaces, and they are a popular, discreet choice for this. Braces also close gaps reliably, particularly when other movements are needed at the same time. Because spaces can try to drift back open, retainers afterward are essential. For gaps especially, we often add a fixed retainer, a thin wire quietly bonded behind the teeth, alongside your removable retainers, and your treatment includes three sets so you always have a backup.

Patient Story

An adult came to our Makawao office wanting to close a single gap between the front teeth. They were a strong candidate for clear aligners and finished in about 10 months, then moved into nighttime retainers to keep the space closed for good.

Why Maui Braces

As a board-certified orthodontist, Dr. Alex Verga limits the practice to orthodontics, all we do is straighten teeth and craft beautiful smiles. We keep things warm, family-friendly, and rooted in the Maui community.

Gap Teeth: FAQs

Why do I have a gap between my teeth?

Usually it comes down to tooth size versus jaw size, a missing tooth, the way teeth erupted, or a low frenum. We identify the cause at your consultation so we close the gap the right way.

Will the gap come back after treatment?

Only if retainers are not worn. Spaces are prone to reopening, which is exactly why we include three sets of retainers and have you wear them nightly for life. For gaps especially, we often add a fixed retainer bonded behind the teeth for extra insurance.

What if my teeth are too small to fully close the gap?

Then the gap is partly a tooth-size issue. We position the teeth ideally with orthodontics, and your dentist can add small build-ups or veneers to finish the look. Dr. Alex flags this at your consultation so you know the full plan up front.

Can Invisalign close a gap?

Yes. Clear aligners are excellent at closing spacing and are a popular, nearly invisible way to do it.

How long does it take to close a gap?

Simple spacing can move relatively quickly, often under a year, though it depends on the size of the gap and whether other corrections are needed.

Will insurance help with closing a gap?

Many plans with an orthodontic benefit apply. We verify your benefits before you start.
